I have a 79 CJ7 with a 71 or 72 model 304. The heads are stamped 71 but I believe it came out on a 72 CJ. I have noticed a couple lifters are starting to tick. I was thinking of putting a new cam and lifters in it and I was wandering if I could get a good camming sound out of a stock engine with just a bigger cam. The engine is in very good shape other than a couple lifters not acting right so I don't really wan't to throw a set of 11to1 pistons in it right now. The only offroading I do is to get to some of my favorite fishing holes or hunting spots so low end torque isn't a problem. I'm not sure what it is geared but it is pretty low so a slightly high RPM range wouldn't be that bad neither. I just wan't to rumble when I'm cruising Ocean Boulevard. It also has the odd 71 or 72 heads that have the individual rocker arm studs like a 350 Chevy. Will that hender the cam options and who makes the best cams for a 304?
Many of the cam manufactorers have help lines you can call, which are staffed with people who can help you pick out the right cam for your application. But you should find out as many specifics as you can about your jeep before you call them.
