Symptoms of a leaking Rear Mail Seal?

Anybody know how to identify a leaking Rear Main Seal?

I've got motor oil (definitely not trans fluid) leaking down the forward face of the transmission housing, not much, but enough to drip onto the driveway. 3 weeks ago I changed out the oil pan seals and gaskets because one was leaking on the passenger side above the starter motor. First time in 10 years! That seems fixed, but it looks like something else is leaking now (or still).

Would the rear main seal leak like that, or would it just contaminate something else internal with motor oil?

Thanks for any help ...

I second Boston Mangler's motion. Find a small mirror and try to take a look behind the valve cover(s).

Good Luck!

Sometimes the intake gasket will leak at the back and run down the rear of the engine also.

Re: Symptoms of a leaking Rear Main Seal?

Thanks for the tips, you guys. It looks like that's the problem. I looked at some very old posts ('99) and someone else had the same symptoms.

I'm new to this board, but I feel like I know everybody already! I've been skimming through posts from the beginning and have learned volumes, and soooo many good ideas. Thanks again for helping out a "stranger". I think in a matter of months I'll be up to "enthusiast"!

If the valve cover is not the thing that is leaking, check the rear of the oilpan. I had to reseal the oil pan twice back there....Good luck.
