Anyone running a T18/NP205 or NP435/NP205 w/258?

First of all I am considering a tranny swap. I have a T-176 so I know that either the T-18 or NP435 will bolt right in. I would rather not purchase an adapter for my Dana 300 so I was thinking about doing a complet tranny/Tcase swap. Does the NP205 have the same outputs as the Dana300? What about the overall length of the cases, will I have any rear driveshaft? Is anyone running this setup in their CJ?

Thanks,
Tom

Hey,
I bet nobody uses the NP205 because it only has a 1.96:1 Low range....
No wonder I can't find any write-ups.

Later.....

Wel, the only problem is the NP435 and T-18 are both Ford trannies (you knew this), but the NP205 that came with them has a driver's side drop, not the passenger's side you need. I am running the SM465/NP205 setup in my scrambler, and it's only 3.5" longer than the stock SR-4/D300 combo that was in there. I do know of someone that is running a NP435 in their Scrambler, but they needed an adapter to run the D300 for the correct side. If you wanted to swap front axles to a Ford one, to get the driver's drop, it should work. Hey, just coil it while you're at it!

I new there was a reason everyone wasn't doing this. The adapter for NP435 to Dana300 is around $500. Not worth it for me. I think I will consider the 4:1 kit for my D300.

Thanks for the input....

the 4to1 kit costs more than the tranny adapter so why go that route?

true but still less than $100 difference. the going rate for t-18's and np435's (junkyard/used) is around $200 and the adapter for the np435 to a dana 20 or 300 x-case can be found for less than $500. i got mine for $445 from hicks (it was a few years ago though). the 4to1 gears run over $600. it's just my opinion that i would rather spend a few extra dollars if it ment i wag going to end up with a stronger tranny. just my op.

Re: Anyone running a T18/NP205 or NP435/NP205 w/258?

I was thinking that it would cost less to do the 4:1. Because I won't have to buy the tranny, adapter, and I can keep my current driveshafts. I can do the 4:1 and rebuild my D300 at the same time. Then later if I blow my tranny I can consider a swap. For now both my tranny and tcase are working fine. My main consideration for a swap was improving my crawl ratio. The cheapest and easiest route is the 4:1.

Thanks for the replies,

Tom
