My jeep backfires like crazy when I start it.

Every time I start her up(76 Jeep CJ-5 258).She doesn't want to stay started.I sit there and warm her up for a minute and go...when going down the street and pressing the gas she backfires and it sounds like a gun shot.It loses power for a second and its really loud.It will slowly quit doing it after a while.It takes a good ten minutes for everything to stop.Everytime I take off from a stop in that time it wants to die and backfires.Its really embarressing at school [/blush}

If knowledge=power and time=money.. please donate all your time and knowledge to my jeep!

Check all of your wiring on the ign. system. (coil and all)
Is the dist. cap cracked?
Does your dist. have points? (are they burnt)
This is where I'd start.
Did it start doing this all at once or has it always?

I'd verify that your timing chain hasn't slipped.

I'd say that your choke isn't staying closed long enough, and that your not warming up your engine before you take off.

Re: My jeep backfires like crazy when I start it.

I recently (two weeks ago) replace the distributor cap,plugs and coil.I have no idea what a point is.It has always done this since I got it.It use to be a lot better though.It would only take like 30 seconds to warm up.Now that its colder it is 10 times worse.

If knowledge=power and time=money.. please donate all your time and knowledge to my jeep!
