whats wrong with my carb?

I have a weber carb on my 88 258. The problem is I can't get it to lean out enough I don't think. I adjust the rich/lean screw out almost all the way and it doesn't appear to do anything. Also, I have to have the idle adjustment screw all the way down for it to idle good (1100 RPM). The stock carb was the same way, idle screw tightened almost all the way down to get a high enough idle. I had it backed out for a while, and then today it stalled so I turned it back up to about 1200 rpm. What else could be causing this idle problem?
Also, I get really poor gas mileage, like in the 13-14 range. What am I doing wrong?

Re: whats wrong with my carb?

sounds like your timing is off.. your jeep should be idling 400-600 rpms.. and if you want to lean out your mixture.. you need to screw them in..

Re: whats wrong with my carb?

I made the same mistake with the idle mixture screws till I finally looked at a picture in my repair manual. I cranked them in till the idle just started to drop and then I was finally able to set my choke and idle speed properly. I actually have a smooth idling bbd carb on my 4.2. As for the fuel economy... I'm still seeking answers myself.

Re: whats wrong with my carb?

I accidently plugged the fuel line return hose and made the weber overpressurise the bowl, flooding the barrels and gave me crappy milage.. you sould be getting better than stock MPG. If your timing wasnt off before the carb mount it still isnt off.
