Re: firing order on a 258
That's the proper firing order, check it again. Maybe your distributor is 180 degrees off. That's all I can think of right now. Maybe someone else will have more ideas on your problem, also try giving more details on your problem.

Re: firing order on a 258
If you are refering to a 258 I6 and mean the firing of the plugs as the engine is turning trying to start, then you have the right firing order. But on the other hand if you are working on a 2.5 I4 or 304 V8 then this will not work. What are you doing????? Need more input from person asking What question!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You need to verify two things. Those things are: [*] Verify that your rotor is pointing at the terminal your #1 plug wire is on when the engine is at TDC (or better still, when the engine is at whatever you have your base timing set to) on cylinder # 1.[*] Verify that you have the wires oriented correctly (clockwise or counterclockwise (not sure which it would be on that particular one, but you could tell by cranking the engine over and watching the rotor.)).

Just some thoughts...

Re: firing order on a 258
Does having the distributor 180 degrees off make any difference in preformanc?

Re: firing order on a 258
If the distributor is firinng 180 degrees out the spark event will be happening on or about TDC of the exhaust stroke instead of the compression stroke. also some engines the distributor must be installed absolutely correctly for proper operation due to uneven firing orders, examples: 90 degree V6s, air cooled volkswagens....
Also an easy way to remember I6 firing order: Too young, Too old, Just right, 15,36,24 dirty old men think these things up.

good luck, jjc
