replacement starter...which one?

I did a search and found some info about possibly using a heavy duty factory unit. My cj has a 304, is there a heavy duty version available for it? Or could I use a Ford or Chevy starter on it??? If so is there a heavy duty or gear reduction starter that will bolt right in? Is there one on a particular model year that I should be looking for?
I don't want to buy the mean green starter, because its too much cash. Any other ideas?

Re: replacement starter...which one?

there is no heavy duty AMC starter that Im aware off, except for a gear type mini starter which I think is the Mean green you spoke of ( over $200 Ithink)

all 290,304,340,360,390,401 use the same starter its a FORD starter with a slightly differnt nozzle on it,up until the mid 80s when the Fullsized Jeeps started using a Motorola starter, Ive never used the motorola, so i cant say, but the earloier Ford types are like $30 for a lifetime warrenty, and Ive gone thru a few, they seem to last a couple of years if you dont soak them in oil too much, they dont seem to have any trouble turning my 360 over, and I think it has slightly higher than stock compression.

Speaking of the Mean Green, can someone tell me why the heck that thing is so frickin expensive. I hear they are good, but come on, the price is beyond ridiculous.
