how hard is steering w/front locker?

I have a 73 cj5 with no power steering. How hard will it be to steer with front locker? My jeep is primarily used for offroad and play toy. NOT a daily driver.

Re: how hard is steering w/front locker?

Depends on what you are driving on. If you are on slickrock sandstone, good luck with no power steering. There are times I can hardly turn my wheels (I have ps), but having a twin stick or unlocking a hub will make it liveable. The advantages far outweigh the disadvantages.

Brad's right. W/O power steering .....have fun.
Also turning radius goes to that of a greyhound bus.
Like he said too........their awsome and you'll get used to 3 point turns.
Put P/S on it first though.

Re: how hard is steering w/front locker?

Most of the Zuki's don't have power steering, and a few of them run front lockers. It is almost impossible to steer, even with a light trail rig. I'd definitely suggest power steering, and even a twin stick if you can swing it. It's not impossible to drive, just very hard.

Re: how hard is steering w/front locker?

I'm with everyonre else, even with power steering, it can be rough to steer with a true front locker....best bet is power steering, or if you're really set on going all out....you could get AGRs new Rock Ram kit...and let us know how it worked out....(smile)

Re: how hard is steering w/front locker?

More info would be nice, what are you running? tires, rear locker?, engine, all that. Update your profile it's here for a reason. I would suggest power steering w/ or w/o a locker up front it just helps. The only rigs that some of them don't run power steering is mud racers, that's because they loose when the belt gets covered in mud, most of them though don't have a full locker up front anyways.

Re: how hard is steering w/front locker?

All the posts are correct about the extended turning radius and armstrong steering when a locker goes up front. How ever!!! if you were planing on going to power steering, but you are happy with the standard steering, you might consider going with an ARB locker in the front. This is the Rolls Royce of front lockers as far as I'm concerned. You get the tight steering of opens and the traction capabilities of a locker with the push of a button.
