Early backfire?

Wierd. To start my Jeep, I get in and pump the gas once, then turn the key. It usually fires up ('85 AMC 360 w/2100). Today, for the first time ever, I pumped the gas once, turned the key, and KABLAAAAM!!!, a big 'ol backfire. Then it ran fine all the way home. Scared the heck out of me, though. The cops were even driving up as I left work, asking about a gunshot. Needless to say, I was really embarrassed. Why do y'all think it did this?

Re: Early backfire?

Something like that happened to me once, only after the backfire it would not start, and stranded me at work at night. So after a while of trying to figure it out I caught a ride home and went back the next day armed with new modules tools, timing lights and everything you can think of.When I got there I opened the hood and looked for visual causes and the only thing I could find was a coil wire that may have been knocked loose while looking for the cause or a few days before when I had done the TFI duraspark upgrade.I pushed the coil wire back in and it started right up,and I just retimed it.
So if you have done any goofing around under the hood latley recheck everything and Give your coil wires a push for good luck.
OH YEAH it has not happened since,Maybe it was a GREMLIN
good luck

Re: Early backfire?

Good point. I did replace my fuel filter last night, and put some stress on the wires in the area. But it didn't do it this morning, nor after the stop I made on the way home. Damn, these things are never easy.
