Help identify this axle please

Hi folks,

I am restoring a '67 Jeepster, so I have been spending a lot of time on the Jeepster section of this BBS. I have a questions that I thought some of the short wheelbaser would have more experience with, so here goes:

I just bought a D44 rear. The guy who sold it said he didn't know exactly where it came from, but he thought it was a CJ. After bringing it home and cleaning it up, I finally noticed that the diff is offset about 2 inches to the driver side.

The axle is flanged, 30 spline count, about 46 inches from inside mounting plate to inside mounting plate. The axle shafts themselves are differnet lengths.

Some folks over on the Jeepster board have suggested that it might be a postal Jeep D44.

Can anyone shed any light on what it is I have purchased? More importantly, do I need to worry about the offset causing any vibrations or other problems when I finally get this thing back together?

Re: Help identify this axle please

That sounds like a CJ 44 to me. Mine is not centered perfectly and has different length axle shafts on each side. The narrow track 44's have a width of 50.5" from wheel mounting flange to wheel mounting flange. I'm not sure what you meant by mounting plate when you gave your measurements. If you meant wheel mounting flange it does sound more like a postal 44.
