89 Jeep Problems

My brother has an 89 Jeep (cj?) that when he puts it in rev. he has to give it lots of gas or it will stall and at stoplights he has to put in nuetral so it doesnt stall. It is an auto. tranny. It also has the stock 4cyl, which suprisingly goes pretty good. My question is, why does it stall, and how hard would it be to drop a V8 or inline 6 in there? He's planning on putting big tires on it and getting it painted, unless I can convince him it's too much of a hassle and buy it from him and do it myself

Thanks for your time.

Re: 89 Jeep Problems

Your brothers 89 is a YJ. Are you sure he has the four banger or does he have the 4.2l I6? If it's the I6, clean the idle tubes in the carb. They always gum up. If it is the four banger, I have more questions. Does it happen all the time or just intermittenly? Through all temperature ranges or just when its warm or cold? What are the rpm's in neutral? The rpm's typicly drop a few hundred when put into gear. If the idle is set too low in park, it will stall in gear. Also check the air cleaner. Jeeps are used in the dirt so the filters get clogged faster. It may not be getting enoough air. After those simple checks it could be anything to do with the fuel injection ie clogged injecters, faulty relay...
