NP435/D300 in a CJ - Driveshaft problem?

I need some opinions to help settle a "discussion" I was having here.

I am gathering parts to put a NP435 and a Dana 300 in my '74 CJ-5. Planning on keeping the 258 that is in there. A buddy of mine here is certain that this combo will leave me with an unusably short rear drive shaft (his position is that I should do a v-8/np435/Dana 20 and move everything forward). I know I will have to shorten it a little, but will it be too short to work right? I want to do a little rock crawling, so I will want some susupension travel, but I am only looking at 2.5 inches of lift and 32" tires.

Is anybody doing this combo in a regular wheelbase -5?
Would keeping the 20 (blah) help driveshaft length?
And when is this damn election going to end?

(OK, well the np435 is in the garage next to the Jeep)

How'bout some dimensions on the tranny and t-case? I looked but couldn't find any. I swapped in a t-18 with a Dana 20 into my CJ5 without problems, but it's got a 304, so that's apples to oranges... How much longer is the tranny than the one you've got now?

That combo would make for a pretty short driveshaft. I've seen longer combinations in a '5 and they work. Swapping for a V8 won't require you to move things forward if you stick with an AMC V8. The mounting face for the bellhousing on an AMC V8 is in the same position as it is on a 6-cylinder. The shortest combo you're going to find is T18/D20. That's my combo and my driveshaft is around 16" from transfer case yoke to diff yoke.

I had that combo in a 74 cj5 I used to own with 2 1/2 in. springs and 304 v8.It had a fairly short drive shaft, but it worked just fine for me!! I say go for it..You'll love it as far as gears are concerned..I didnt use a cv either, but I'm sure it woulda fit also..

Outstanding!

That is what I wanted to hear, I was hoping someone else had done that.

Off to the garage.
