what are these holes for

I have a 79 CJ7 with a 304, T-150, and Dana20. My question is about the two holes in the back of the bell housing right where the transmission bolts up. They are five eighths inch holes. The one on the left is in the middle right behind the clutch fork and the entire hole is open. The one on the right is a little lower and is covered with about a quarter of an inch of the flange on the transmission. Are these holes supposed to be open or is there supposed to be some kind of plug in them. I have some plugs I was going to put in them to keep dirt out but I was wandering if they are supposed to be left open.

Re: what are these holes for

Jeep bellhousings are interchangable between engines and transmissions (certain years ).If the holes are already drilled out someone may have swapped trannies or it is a donor bellhousing from another jeep,You could plug up the holes.

These holes have no threads though. They look like holes that have no purpose. The hole behind the clutch fork may be used to put that little ball back on the fork pivot I think.

Re: what are these holes for

yea those are just there for different tranny options...mine has that too.....its normal...i think the factory tapped them depending on what tranny they put it...but the hole were always be there from factory

but speaking of holes.....i have these strange holes in my jeep....they are kinda brown and crusty and appear over the wheel wells and on rockers......i just can figure it out .......(and yes im being sarcastic)

so dont worry about the wholes in the bellhousing....

Re: what are these holes for

If I plug them to keep stuff out will it do more harm than good? Like trapping heat in or something.
