Jeeps top heavy ?

I have just got my first jeep:-) and while I was shopping for insurance the prices seemed to be out there. I knew they were going to be higher do to the fact that it would have an open top and such, but this much. I finally found cheep insurance through Gieco.

I have owned a 88 bronco II and a 80 Datsun pick-up and they seem to just as narrow stance as the jeep. I would figure that the bronco would be easier to roll do to the fact that with all the metal above your head it would be top heavy and it was not. Same goes for the Datsun. I have wheeled both before and in some not so nice places and never once have I felt that I was going to go over. I know about the consumer reports on the Samuri in the late 80's and early 90's and there again it was 10 years after I had driven one in HI. (rental) never felt that I was in any danger even on the trails on the north side of the island.

Is this just the media, the way we build them, or the way we drive them. So far I have been quite happy with my purchase (not the wife) she'll get over that one day.

I would just like some thoughts on this subject.

First of all......NEVER trust the media. Remember, those people all sided with the dirtbag in convincing us that Ken Starr was the bad guy, instead of the lying, piece of crap in the white house. But on to Jeeps. AS MANUFACTURED, Jeeps are pretty stable. It's actually tough to roll a late-model Jeep. If you jack it up; put huge tires on it; well.....it CAN make it more unstable. You will be happy to know, that the statistics from the Highway Loss Data Institute rate Jeeps as WELL above average in crash injuries (Wranglers are 89......100 is average....a Suzuki is 111....a Geo Tracker is 143...an Isuzu Amigo is 151) Datsuns weren't rated, but most small pickups were better than average except for Toy, Mitsu,Isuzu, and Nissan.....they were all about 112. Jeeps are perfectly safe vehicles as long as they are driven responsibly. They are NOT sport cars and should not be driven as though they were. Good Luck with your CJ-5!!

Your CJ5 is a little more prone to roll over than the later models. You may be too young to remember the big deal the liberal media democrat slugs made in about 1980 about how Jeeps rolled over easily. They woud take one on a test track and go about 50 and jerk the steering wheel hard and guess what? It rolled over. Yes, the center of gravity is higher. Those days the type of bias belted snow tires they came with were very un forgiving. If you got it to start sliding sideways, they bit into the road surface and the Jeep could roll over. I did this in a 1979 CJ7. In the early 80's the axles were widened and shortly thereafter the newer designed Wranglers came out and are safer than the old models. As stated before, Jeeps are not sports cars. Their purpose is entirely different.

I saw the 60 minutes show that night..What a crock of crap. Did you see the motor on the steering column? It looked like a starter motor. That motor turned the wheels so fast I bet ANY car would roll over in those circumstances. I was blown away. Especially when my dad saw that broadcast and almost took my best friend away from me. Luckily my dad is very levelheaded and realised that that was a VERY biased presentation aimed at some corporation that pissed some other corporation off!!!

The one I liked Rick, was the Chevy pickup that they rigged with a toy rocket motor to blow up when it got hit so they could say that MY GM pickup was no good. Lessee....it has 275K and if I hit and completely destroy a Lexus, I will still be able to open the doors. THOSE KLINTUNOID-LIBERAL LYING SOB's!

Dave, didn't it have to get hit by a train first? Then it would promptly blow up. Or was that just a dream I had???? I just can not remember what I dream or what is real. Maybe they can't either...

You know,.....we used to have a truck with WAYYY too much power, and WAYYY too many low gears such that whenever an inexperienced dummy got in it and got stuck, he would blow the driveline between the brownie and the main box. The shaft would then beat the crap out of the GAS tank...this was a gasser....a big Dodge with a transplanted Chrysler in it. LUCKILY, the tank never blew up, but oh how I threatened to move it outside the frame....exactly where the GM pickups had theirs...away from the exhaust...away from behind the DRIVER'S SEAT(SUPER-DANGEROUS!)...and away from errant drivelines.
