advice to modifications to full roll cage

Im looking for some advice to modifications to my full roll cage I am thinking of doing to gain more room in my CJ7.

I now have a full roll cage and find having the bars in front attached to the floor a real pain, small window cranks and less legroom. I was thinking that I could cut the front bars and attach them to a point on the dash say where the windshield bracket attaches. This would still offer some protection (better than nothing) while freeing up valuable leg space. It seems that even stock YJs and TJs only have bars connected to the top of the windshield.

I realize the best way is to the floor (and onto) the frame but I do not do heavy-duty off-roading. Id just like to get some advice on this since once I cut the bars thats it!

Re: advice to modifications to full roll cage

's this. You make some heavy plates which fit into the kick panel area, picking up the body bolts from the front fender, and have a good flat floor flange on them which goes under the mats. The plate bolts to the side )where the kick panel should be) in several places, spreading out the load and keeping the plate from collapsing straight down. Then the bar drops down through a modified dash to connect to the plate. You cut the bar in half vertically to weld a long area where it contacts the plate. Then you find some longer window cranks. I never believe any statistics unless my moonguys made 'em up themselves.

Re: advice to modifications to full roll cage

Sounds Good! I'm 6'5' and have been looking for a way to install more protection w/o giving up legroom. How about 1x5 stl tubing (do they make it?) for more lateral stability? Has anyone seen an alternative like these in use?
