Loud Starter

1979 CJ7, 304. I replaced the broken starter this past weekend. The old starter was noisy and the new on is too. It appears there is too much clearance between the starter gear and the starter ring. There is a little play in clearance. I moved the starter as far as I could towards the flywheel, taking up all the clearance. The first time I cranked the engine it was a lot quiter. The next time I cranked it, it was loud again. I loosened the starter and did the same thing again. This time I tightened the two bolts as much as I dared. Same thing, first crank quieter, second crand back to loud. Any suggestions on what I should do now?

Re: Loud Starter

Just thought I would add why I'm not at work today. The first Correctional Officer goes on trial today that the State of Florida says was involved in the death of a death row inmate a while back. I couldn't be on the Jury. My son and cousin both worked death row. Neither of them were involved in the inmate's death. They both knew him well though. I wanted to be on the jury. As it is, I wasted the day unless I get the starter fixed on the Jeep.

I'm scheduled for jury on Wednesday, but they rarely choose me because of my obvious ties to that "Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy" that Mrs. Scumbag warned the nation about. You know the one......that vicious bunch who fabricated the Monica Lewinsky story to make the scumbag look bad? PLUS, Jeepchick is a 21-yr veteran of the "Plush Chain of Hotels" that they call a prison system here in CA. REGARDING THE STARTER.......how about filing one hole to swing the starter over? Then make a "thrust shim" to go in the space and HOLD it there? Hate to waste a good "jury day".

Re: Loud Starter

Thanks CJDave. That may be the only way to get the clearance right and hold it.
