Stalling after hard stops.

1989 Islander, 258, auto (999), totally stock except for 4" lift..The jeep runs fine at gradual stops. When I brake hard the engine dies. It starts right back up, but I have no clue why it is doing this just on the hard stops... You guys have any ideas????

Re: Stalling after hard stops.

CJDave, I don't want to seem ignorant or anything, but what exactly is a dashpot? I also can't believe no one else has heard of this problem....Thanks for your help.

Re: Stalling after hard stops.

Tommy,
I have the same problem (77 CJ7 304). Mine only does it on really hard stops so I haven't bothered to check into it yet, but I will check my FSM tonight and see if it has any clues. As for the dashpot (if you have one), it is a diaphragm on the carb. Not sure of where on your application. Sorry I can't be more helpful, but if I find anything out I'll let you know.

Re: Stalling after hard stops.

The dashpot should be mounted on the same bracket as the high idle solenoid, right on the carb, and will be a round shiny thing with a bolt poking out of the center to attach it on one side and a stem with an adjustable bolt on the other side. If it moves real easy the diaphram has gone south.
