TRANNY STUCK IN 3RD ON THE WILLYS

'46 CJ-2A with all stock running gear.
Spicer 18 x-fer case.
L-134 flathead motor.
Not sure of the tranny.

Well, we got the Willys down to the deer lease this weekend and we drove the he11 out of it for about six hours.
Took it up the bad hill and it just creeped up it like it was nothing.
At the end of the day we were coming back to camp and I put it into third to get up some more speed so we could get the fire going and what not.
Anyway, I tried to downshift and the darn thing just wouldn't come out of third gear.
We took the shifting dog off the top of the tranny and looked around for a little bit, got the lever working and it still will not come out of third gear.
Could this be the gears are seized together?
Is this caused by heat?
I tried moving the gears in the tranny by hand and the one in front will not move forward or backward.
The gear in the rear will easily move forward and backward.
Does anybody have any idea what could have happened?
Please respond if you have any knowledge of transmissions.
Thanks, and have a good day.

I have a M38(CJ3A) maintanance manual that I will look at this weekend when I get back home. I don't think the trans is that much differant. Even if it is it might give you an idea anyway. Back to the top with you.

Re: TRANNY STUCK IN 3RD ON THE WILLYS

Well, I talked to some transmission guys today and explained what happened to it and what it would and would not do.
I got home and tinkered with it for about fifteen minutes and I finally got it unstack from third gear.
The gear oil looked like chocolate milk which means water.
The stuck position could have been from too much heat built up over the day of driving.
I got new oil in it with some 'special sauce' to help it shift smoother and stop leaking.
TOmorrow I am going to get a new shifting plate which should also help smooth the shifting.
Andy, I have a manual for the jeep, but I have not even looked at the tranny section yet.
I believe the tranny is a T-90 which is the three speed H-pattern.
I hope all of this works well and it will stop sticking.
Take care and have a good day.
