More thought on the 2 tranny post

Here's the thought that came to me last night...
Remember Tex knows someone who runs a manual and an auto (was it SM465 and a C6??)...well, what's the biggest advantage of a auto? The torque converter. What's the biggest advantage of a manual? The low gears and the clutch. Why not take a lockup torque converter, and put the lockup function on a switch...and put it in between the clutch and the engine or the clutch and the tranny...So you can just lock it up when you don't need it (to avoid building up too much heat) and you can leave it open when you want to have the fluid coupling... Like if you're going to do mud drags...start off with the TC unlocked, the clutch engaged, transmission in a slightly higher gear than normally used in a manual...bury the gas, when the rpms come up and the TC hooks up, lock it, and use the clutch to shift...or when you're rock climbing and want auto finesse...just flip a switch and unlock the TC, and you've got it. So you can crawl ahead with a 2:1 TC and a 6.32:1 first gear, in low range...and when you need to stop, you can just step on the clutch. When you head down the highway, lock up the TC and go. When you need to pull that stuck motorhome out of the ditch, low gears, open TC, and you don't have to slip the clutch at all. Now, I don't know if a lockup TC would be strong enough to transmit all the engine's power at all RPMS???? Like if you were in granny low at idle with the TC locked up...but then again, the torque reduction would be on the far side of the TC, so it should be fine...and as a last resort, you have the clutch as a sort of failsafe. Downsides? Well, added weight, complexity, heat from the TC, more drivetrain length... Ahh, it's just a thought. Ever since reading that post I've been dreaming about 2 shift levers popping up in the center of the jeep...but it just ain't gonna happen in a CJ5.

Currently looking for corporate sponsors for jeep improvements...will sell advertising space on jeep, will also sell soul/body...make an offer.
