Can\'t find Xylene anywhere!!!

Okay, I'm in the process of trying to find Xylene to clean my tub with and can't find it anywhere! I've heard Acetone eats paint away so I don't want that. Anyone know anything about MEK? Will that hurt my paint? Thanks a bunch!

Re: Can\'t find Xylene anywhere!!!

James,
Any autobody, paint supply shop will have Xylene.
Ive used MEK(MethylEthylKeytone, or something like that) for variouse degreasing type cleanups when it was laying around, but Im not sure of its affect on paint. Wherever its being used should be getting covered with Herc anyway, so whats the big deal? Start covering that darn thing and show us some pics afterward, j/k sorta. Im warning you though get some surgical gloves, this stuff does not come off once it begins to dry, it has to wear off.
Good luck.

Re: Can\'t find Xylene anywhere!!!

I looked everywhere for it when I Herculined my truck and eventually found it at True Value Hardware. Of course, I had already finished the job when I found it.

Re: Can\'t find Xylene anywhere!!!

I get Xylene from Van Waters & Rogers. They supply reagent grade and it's kinda expensive. I wasn't aware it was available in retail outlets. It may or may not eat your paint depending on the paint.

As for MEK, it ain't particular what it eats including your hide. Be very careful with it. DO NOT get it on any rubber, plastic, wiring or other stuff you may want to keep. This stuff will eat IMRON.

I couldn't find Xylene any where either. I ended up getting it at Home Depot. Then I found out I'm not supposed to use it on fiberglass..... I'll sell you half a can.... ha ha.

Re: Can\'t find Xylene anywhere!!!

Hey, did you know Xylene can be used as an octane booster, and so can Toulene. I can't remember the mix ratio, but I think it was around 20:1. It is a better, and cheaper booster than of the shelf products. Of course this is from about 6+ years ago, so my mind is a little rusty (my wild street racing days ).

Thanks, Ray

Re: Can\'t find Xylene anywhere!!!

I work for an ACE and my store carries it. Other ACE stores might not as they are all independantly owned.

Re: Can\'t find Xylene anywhere!!!

It is labeled as paint thinner in alot of store and you have to read the label to find out if it is xylene. It is like 115 octane or something. You can mix it with regular gas but you have to add some marvel mystery oil to add some lubrication that is not there, but is in gas. If anyone want to find out the safe mixture I will post back.
