Re: Dana 44 fit question

The postal jeep rear 44's are kind of weird. First off they are over-sprung, secondly the axle shafts are not the same length. The good thing is that most of them came with a limited slip diff (track-loc). The width should be right for your 5 assuming its narrow track (they didn't have wide track in '74 if I remember right.) They also have 11" drums which is nice too.

To make it fit you will have to weld some new perches and with the pumpkin position not the same as your original 44 you may have some compound angle in your rear driveshaft. the difference is only about 2" though so I don't know if it will be that bad.

My name is Ted, and I'm a Jeep-a-holic.

Re: Dana 44 fit question

Not only are they SOA, the springs are also mounted outboard of the frame as well The rear springs are also 2.5" wide...

Restoring a '74 DJ-5C It was running good, so I messed with the carb to make it run better. Now it wont run at all!
