Towing a CJ7

I'm moving and will need to tow my Jeep behind the UHaul. The trip is about 1000 miles. I'll be using a bumper mounted tow hitch on the front Jeep bumper(not sure what it's called).

Is there anything I need to do to prep the Jeep for the trip? Lube any parts or service the differential maybe? Also, what do I have to do to the Jeep during the tow (i.e. I heard that the transfer case has to be in neutral). I've never towed before so I have no clue what to do.

Thanks for the help.

Re: Towing a CJ7

I tow my YJ 4.2,automatic on trips of 2000 miles or more, with an RV,I just check ever thing out like I would for any long auto trip. I put transfer case in nurtal and the auto. in park and leave the steering unlocked.

My Jeep is a work in progress, Happy Trails

Re: Towing a CJ7

Be sure to securely connect the Jeep, dont wanna lose it! See if you can find a way to use a trailer wiring connection to make your jeeps lights work like trialer lights, turn signals, etc, nost states require this. Leave a key in the igniton, to keep the wheel unlocked. I'd put the T-case in neutral, unlock the hubs, and remove the rear driveshaft. I'd also replace both differential fluids if you have the time, just to be extra safe...check the tire pressures too, now may be a good time to rotate may want to fasten some cardboard, etc. onto your windshield, if there is a possibility of rocks being thrown up at it. Other than that, you should be OK!

If you cant DODGE it, JEEP it!

Re: Towing a CJ7

Remy gave you some good advice, let me stress the importance of droping the rear drive line. Over a 1000 mile trip of towing the transfer case will not get the proper lube to the rear bearings and this will burn it out.
