Setting up 4.10 R&P (specs. for 20)??

Does anyone know where I may obtain specs (backlash, pinion depth, etc) for setting up 4.10 R&P in the AMC 20? Haynes manual doesn't even have that .
Thanks for the help.

if you got new gears, they should have the instructions... However,
http://drivetrain.com/ringpinioninstal.html
should have all the answers to your questions!

Re: Setting up 4.10 R&P (specs. for 20)??

I just read those instructions, nice detail, but one thing, the backlash they recommend IMO is way too large, they say 8-12thou, but they do qualify that with saying STREET driven. I do believe in a 4by you will have better luck in the 4-9thou range, especially if you are running a locker. With a Detroit this is especially important because of the built in backlash in the unit.

There is a write-up on my website that includes links that might be useful:

I have the factory manuals at home, 3 volumes, and can fax over pages if you have a number. They're for a 1978 CJ, but it's the same rear end as your '81.

My model 20 backlash is set at .010-.012 and has run on and off road for 8 years. Gets inspected regularly and still looks perfect.

Take a look at all those other sites that Tom has on his page. EVERY one of them says 4-8thous. Anything more than 9 is too big.
