t-176???

I just purchased a 80 cj5 with the renegade package and 258.This Jeep is all original. What I am starting to wonder is, the tranny should be a t-176 right? But I was reading where they used another weaker tranny in some of the cj's. Any help would be greatky appreciated. By the way, I cant find the tranny tag on it.

Re: t-176???

I could also be a t4 which would suck. a 176 doesn't have super low gearing but is a good eneough tranny

Re: t-176???

If I'm not mistaken the other manual would be the SR4, very bad trans due to ball bearings and their resultant failure. The only downside to a 176 is the rather high 1st gear. Your casting numbers on the cases will be T176: C2604xxx; and for the SR4: 13-32-065-9xx or 13-40-065-9xx. I got the casting info from the 4WD Hardware catalog.

Re: t-176???

I think you can tell which one you got by the stick. t-176 is a stright stick and the t-4 is curved. also the t-176 and dana 300 use one shifter boot where the other uses 2.

Re: t-176???

Thanks guys for the info. I just checked a Chiltons and a Haynes and all cj5 that year with the 258 and the 4 banger came with the 176. The cj-7 had the sr-4 with the 4 banger and some of the 258's. Thanks again
