Loud Crackling Noises

Ok .. I have a problem, but can't seem to find the cause yet.

When I am in First or Reverse, and gunning it off the line (barely) I hear a loud crackling noise from something under me. I have not been able to pin point it yet, but I have greased all the nipples I can find (and reach). I will be getting a flex-hose with smaller fitting to reach into the tighter spots (any specific hints?) for those hard to reach points.

The sound is not heard in any other gear, unless I am lugging it (4th gear, 7% climb at 60kph).

Thanks for any pointers ..

Re: Loud Crackling Noises

i've heard U-joints (that are pushing rust) make cracking noises that can be heard when driveing slow

Re: Loud Crackling Noises

I had a 3/4 ton van that had the same sound and it turned out to be the U-joint. If you hear a constant "SQUEAK" in slow speed that's sure to be it. Fix it fast before you throw the drive shaft.

HEY, 3/4tonYJ, nice shot. What ya got under that thang?

Re: Loud Crackling Noises

I just pushed my baby past the 258,000km mark .. Its all stock for now, but I was thinking of putting in the short-shaft kit (get rid of that horrible output assm on the T-case) .. is it something I should do now, or just fix the U-joints?

I have never fixed a U-joint before .. any tricks to be aware of?

Thanks!
