Advice on my upper-center console....

Okay, I'm planning on building a custom upper-center console for my YJ. I'm gonna start after I get my front hoop put in. So far I'm planning on this. At the front, I was thinking about puttuing 3-4 gauges hanging down. Then I was gonna put my CB in it. Then a bunch of switches for my off-road lights, my volt gauge(2 batteries), and a bunch of other stuff. What do you all think? What else should I put in there? I'm planning on putting easy-access fuses right next to the toggle switches and having lights for each switch. Any suggestions or questions? Thanks a bunch! I'll draw a pic if anyone wants a better pictures in their minds.

I've been thinking of somthing like that too. I kind of like what Tuffy Securitys Products has http://www.tuffyproducts.com/consoles/overhead.html but I don't like the idea of spending $219. US when I live in Canada

Hey, how don't forget Doug97TJ, Doug Chartier, He's selling a rack he produces you can see it at:

Though I can't speak for him, I bet he'd be glad to sell, modify or advise... He makes a great product.

Good Jeepin'

Re: Advice on my upper-center console....

I am just about done my full cage project and i was thinking of making my own overhead console that would have used the two center spreader bars. Basically I was going to weld a piece of flat steel stock to the top of the cage to cover the space between the spreaders from the front to the back hoop. Underneath I would use another piece of steel that would bolt through the upper piece so you can get inside of it.

Not sure how you would mount your gauges and stuff but its something to think about. The only reason I didn't do it is cause I only wanted to mount the CB up there. I just welded a piece of steel on top and mounted the CB between the two spreaders.

Chevy - built like a ROCK.
Jeep - built to drive OVER rocks.

Why are you putting the gauges up there? Does the YJ have all the guages on the dash right? .. Keep them there and free up space for like a GPS, CB, Switches, Maybe a Speaker?

Put your radio up there too. Keeps it away from the water if you dive too deep and its a whole lot harder to steal when encased in thick steel! I'd weld the bottom piece to the spreader bars and have the top piece hinge or remove somehow. Should make the wiring and mounting of things easier if ya ask me....

Restoring a '74 DJ-5C Its missing the alternator. At first the Ammeter gauge just didn't work but now its missing an alternator

Here is a picture of mine.
I have a dedicated power and ground for the CB running up through the passenger side center hoop leg.
Power for the switches and power ports are ran up through the front driver side hoop leg. And swithch for accessory and light controls are ran down the front passenger hoop leg as part of a 12 wire loom. This seperates my power sources and avoids interference to my CB which uses a 500 amp linear. I also ran an over head light, and 2 power ports. All lights are ran through relays under the hood so I fused them there. A main on off keyed swith in the over head controls power to everything but the power ports and light, so no one can mess with any of the switches if ive locked it out. The console is divided into 3 seperate sections so they can removed individualy when repairs or upgrades are needed. Dont forget to make holes between the spreaders and the hoops when fabricating so that you can run pull wires, and run extra wires for future upgrades. I love my set up. Indicator lights are used to confirm power to the main system and individual lights and switches.

500 amp linear??? A 6000W 12V linear amp? You gotta be competing with radio stations!

Just kidding...I know you meant 500W. I was just imagining the charging system you'd have to have to be able to even dead key a system running 500amps.

Currently looking for corporate sponsors for jeep improvements...will sell advertising space on jeep, will also sell soul/body...make an offer.

Farm Jeep you are correct.
I was trained however on a HF superhetrodyne transmitter in the navy that could talk to Subs underwater, using a unidirectional antenna, maybe I could apply some of that technology now that I have a 500 amps worth of power available.
