T176 Question

I'm looking at a '84 CJ7 and was wondering how to tell the difference between the T176 and the T4. I know the T4 has a curved shifter, but what about the 176?

Thanks...

Re: T176 Question

The T-176 I have has a straight shifter - reverse is to the far right and down. Hope this helps. Also, I think the case is 10 1/2 inches long, while the T-4 is shorter than that (but not sure).

Re: T176 Question

The sure way to tell is, the 176 has an aluminum case and the casting number "2604203" on the side. The T-177 shares the same case and the only way to tell them apart is count the number of teeth on the mainshaft, (when its apart) The 177 has 19, the 176 I think has 20, they're only a tooth apart, both are pretty good. Hope this helps.

Re: T176 Question

a T-4 (& T-5 and SR-4) have a plain cover over the top of the tranny and the shifter mounts on the adaptor between the tranny and transfer case,
the T-176 (pictured) is a top loader with the shifter mounted into the tranny cover.
