Replacing Speedo gear in a Dana 18??

Well i am rebuilding the transfercase and it is time to get my speedometer working. I havn't taken the case apart yet, but i would like to order the gear before. My question is what gear goes bad on the Dana 18? In the diagrams there is two gears. one that slides in te topof the case, and another that looks to be on the shaft. Which one is the culprit for wear. The speedo used to work at times. It would register until i shifted into third gear, then it would die. Also i run 33 inch tires and possible up to 34-35 inchers. Is there a different gear to compensate for the tires.
Thanks

Its been awhile since I had my case apart, but i beileive you'll find the one on the top is plastic. The one on the shaft is actually a machined part of the shaft (i'm pretty sure)and is of course metal. Order the top one. It comes apart pretty easy, so you could even take the gear out first to inspect it.

Thanks Matt,
I havn't had a chance to pulloff the transfercase/tranny yet, with all this damn rain from Gordon. Hopefully this week i can get at it.
