258 fan pulley

First of all,I would like thank all of you for your information and ideas that you leave on this board ,You folks have saved me a lot of money.I have a 1978 cj-5,258 inline six ,carter 1 barrel carb.,and a seven blade mechanical fan.I have just finished rebuilding my motor,so when I put the fan back on,the fan pulley hit the water pump .The water pump was purchased at my local NAPA store, and appeared to be the same as the one that was taken off.My question is,can I use a differant pulley from another jeep,or swap out water pumps, any ideas?

Re: 258 fan pulley

I had the very same problem with a transplant of a 1981 258 into my 1980, I just couldn't get things to line up and messed with it till I took some measurenents. Turned out in my case at least that I had gotten a water pump with a different lenght shaft. There was about 1/4 inch difference, therefore the fan pulley sat 1/4 inch too close to the block. Since that one time I am
careful to take measurements or at least compare pumps very closely. Sorry I don't have any part numbers. I just put one on from NAPA but can't find the receipt. John
