stupid question-drum removal

I am trying to remove the drums on my amc 20 axle. Do I have to remove the big a$$ nut that holds the axles in place to get the drum off or should the drum come off after removal of the screws and backing off the brake adjuster?

opinions/advice appreciated

Re: stupid question-drum removal

the drum should come off.drums can be a real pain in the a$$ as i see you have found. go to the back side of your backing plate and turn the adjuster like you were adjusting them down. the more you loosen the shoes will draw away from the drum and allow the drum to come off. it still may need alittle persuation with a hammer. oh just in case you don't know where the adjuster is, it is a oblong slot at the bottom of the backing plate. there should be a little rubber plug that goes in it so you'll have to remove that. then look inside the slot and you will see a ring with teeth on it and that is what you turn. just use a screw driver. i can't remember which way to turn it but i am pretty sure you rotate it down. hope this helps.

Re: stupid question-drum removal

some might have 3 screws in them.. cant remember.. take them out.. and do what high5 said.. and tap it with a hammer.. if you chip it alittle.. its still ok.. as long as it doesnt go so far to where the pads ride.. or crack it.. those are bad..
