Broke output shaft on D300
I kinda wish I would have kept the 258 in my Jeep, with this 350 in there I'm breaking everything in pieces. From twisted drive shafts, front and rear, busted front diff carrier, and now the transfer case output shaft. I've looked in FWDH and they have the part for $199, should I order the new replacement part, or is there something stonger I can put in there.

I Swear I was not doing smoke shows with my lifted CJ7 with 33" tires, that would be stupid, I'll post pictures when we get them developed.

Re: Broke output shaft on D300
I am courious, do you think that output shaft failed, or the drive shaft broke and took the output shaft out?

I don't think that $200. is a very good price on the shaft. I can still pick up used Dana 300's for around $100. You may want to go shopping around at local yards.

Re: Broke output shaft on D300
this is not unheard of... but oh my... i have never broken a dana 300, i have never seen one break, I've seen methanol burning 800hp big blocks run for years with the same dana 300. Iv'e ignored my dana 300 for years and poured out milky syrup, and i run lots o power.... the 300 is a strong will handle a 350 no problem... most jeep guys have a spare laying around because they don't usually break... me and jeepgod have a pile of spares, and would release them for less than that.

Re: Broke output shaft on D300
i read somewhere that advance adapters sells an upgraded output shaft for a dana 300. i never checked on this but it might be worth looking into.

Stronger parts are not ALWAYS the solution - just get another one out of a donor case and try to go easy on this one - should last awhile without shelling out the big bucks... - Good Luck! - Chuck

Re: Broke output shaft on D300
I believe Sam's Offroad also sells a replacement output shaft for the
D300. Something like 15 - 30% stornger then stock.

Re: Broke output shaft on D300
AA does sell a stronger shaft but its like $500.

Sams does not sell replacement shafts, rather you send yours to him and he has it cryogenically treated and sends it back. He charges too much, anyone can have the same thing done for $50.

Re: Broke output shaft on D300
I broke the drive shaft before, got new stronger ones made up, only the output shaft broke this time. You know how it goes, one last burn out before I go home, BOOM.

Think I'll tear it down and see what it looks like, and just replace the broken parts with used parts. Thanks guys.

Re: Broke output shaft on D300
Once you've built up the motor, axles and tranny... yes it is true that a known week link in the D300 is the output shaft.
Know a guy that is running some pretty beefy ford 9's and he took out the 300's output.
The beefy upgrade from AA seems to be the way to go.
It's like everything else, when it breaks build it back stronger.
But I have heard of a broken duece and a half Rockwell
