welding helmet question

Hey all,

I was just given a "auto darkening" lens for a welding helmet. Its brand new! Of course I went home and the lens is a different size than my current helment...lol So, My question is, Will I be able to just go buy a helmet with the correct lens size or is this going to be a project also?

Thanks for your help. Hey, I held this lens in font of me and tried to weld something..... .WOW! SO NICE! SO CLEAR! SO EASY!

I can't wait to actually weld with it.

Thanks to everyone as always.

There are different size lenses, even within the same helmet brand.

Re: welding helmet question

You will probably have to buy a new helmet. Here's the web site where I got my welder and helmet. They had helmets with different size lenses. Don't know for sure, but suspect you can buy the shell without the lense.

Re: welding helmet question

Yes, the helmets are cheap. The lenses have a limited life span, about 10 years, due to the sealed battery. Just look around for one at your local welding store, they should be able to get one.

Re: welding helmet question

Yeah, price is my concern. I don't mind buying a spare helment but don't want to spend a whole lot. I got this lens for free. And regarding battery life, its solar.

The worst part about it, my local welding shop is closed on weekends. I am going to have to take a 1/2 day from work to go there.. Oh, man....

Re: welding helmet question

You should be able to buy a decent hood for about 30 -35 bucks. Is your new lens the big kind, Like 4``x4``? They make life alot easier when you have to weld all the time, or really awkward welds where you are out of position and in a bind.

Re: welding helmet question

My lense on my "good" helmet is auto darkening , solar rechargable and has Replaceable batteries.
I love it , but it always stays in the garage......not in the field. Too much $$$$$$$$$$.
I've got other helmets I can drop 20ft W/O crying.
