Dual Optimas in a TJ???

Hey guys! Its time for dual optimas for the TJ, with the installation of the XD9000i on the front. I looked in a few places for a dual optima setup. They all said "not for 4 cyl. or 6 cyl. with A/C. We looked in the engine bay of the TJ, with 4.0L and A/C....and there's not a whole lot of room for another battery in there....i know optimas can be mounted in any position, but i somehow just dont see them fitting....Anyone have a Dual optima setup? If so, where'd you put the second battery? Behind the back seat with some 0/2 welding cable? Any and all info greatly appreciated! thanks

Re: Dual Optimas in a TJ???

Isn't there a battery tray on the driver side in the engine area? Right next to the steering shaft. I know a battery would fit there in my TJ.

Re: Dual Optimas in a TJ???

Mike -

I'd look more into the route of a more powerful alternator with just one battery. No matter how many batteries you have, a lower amp alternator will kill the performance of the winch. However, a super high powered alternator will really help you out here.

I have an industrial grade 190 amp unit - you want something with a big strong case for 2 reasons - A) the bigger the case, the better the cooling usually, and B) at highjer rpm, when that baby is being asked for 190 amps (like when welding) - it's putting alot of torque on the case and mounts.

The best part about these is that they typically put out about 60 amps at idle - this means you can winch ALL DAY and never even touch the batteries. Those Warn winches with the high horse seies wound motors are really nice, but they can suck a battery dry in no time flat - I imagine 2 would not be too far behind - look into the alternator thing - from my experience, it's the better solution. I'd try real hard to get a large case design - some of the 130-amp units in the standard Delco case are really too much amperage for that case's cooling capacity...

Re: Dual Optimas in a TJ???

The first pic is of the new smaller Optimas. There is a way to mount two standard Optimas side by side but I cant explain how to do it and I have no pictures.
