Fan distance to Radiator?

I had a flex fan on my Jeep installed by the previous owner (read jeep get's hot wheeling). Yesterday I went to the local you pull it yard. I found a 79 waggoneer with inline 6 in it. I look at the fan and see a 7 blade fan and clutch. I say to myself perfect! However once I installed it, I think it is too close to the radiator. The clutch is about 1/4 inch from the radiator. The clutch I have is about 3 inches thick. Do they make a thinner clutch?? What does the clutch actually do?? My Jeep would really get hot wheeling with the flex fan and with the new fan I can not make the Jeep get hot. I really want to keep this set up. I took it wheeling and just as I thought it is to close and while turning or going up steep hills it barely hits the radiator (not enough yet to damage it). How can I get more room? I think I need at least an inch. Can I take the clutch off and get a spacer to mount the 7 blade fan to?? Will this cause the Jeep to heat up again?? Just when you get one problem solved you run into another. Yes it is a Jeep!!!

TIA

Re: Fan distance to Radiator?

A big part of your problem is a stock 258 fan clutch for a CJ-7 is only about an inch thick!
