CJ5 Auto?

Does anyone know any way to put an automatic behind a 258 6 cyl in a '79 CJ5? I was wondering if the Dana 18 route with a Currie high pinion 9" would work, If anyone knows any combo, i would appreciate it. I want the motor and wheelbase, anything else can change.
Thanks, Mike

Re: CJ5 Auto?

A 'matic behind a straight 6 in a '5? I dunno, sounds awfully tight. Even with a high pinion pumpkin, there might not be enough length. But, then again, one of the *big guns* in the rock crawling world runs a Chrysler 340, 727 auto, d205 t.c. with a high pinion d60 in his CJ-5. I can't imagine how he stuffed it all in there! Hope you hear from someone who has 'been there, done that'.

Re: CJ5 Auto?

I saw an article in the recent 4wd&SU magazine showing how to put an auto trans into a CJ-5. I think the trans used was a TF 909, which is a 904 with a lock up torque convertor. Good Luck!!

Re: CJ5 Auto?

I saw that article too, but they had a 304 in the CJ-5, which was moved forwards more to help with the drivetrain length. That I-6 is l o n g

Re: CJ5 Auto?

Sounds like it would take some serios mods. to do it. The article in the mag took quite a few and as mentioned already it had a 304.

Is it done yet??!!
