Do I Need One

While working on my 88YJ 258, I found that it does not have an ignition resistor. I can't tell if it ever had one, or if someone removed it. I see in Chilton's a wiring diagram showing a resistor. Anyone know if it needs one? Thanks!

Re: Do I Need One

Yeah, you probably do need one. Otherwise, you will have some short lived components. But it may be there and you just aren't recognizing it. Some vehicles have separate resistor, while others have a "resistance ignition wire". The resistance is distributed throughout the wire with no individual resistor. Some wires state that they are special resistance wires that should not be cut or shortened. Likewise, some schematics show a single resistor when in fact there is a special wire there doing the same thing. You might take a closer look at the vehicle.

Sorry I don't know which is standard for your vehicle. One of the experts can probably help further.

Good luck. Turtle

Re: Do I Need One

If your wiring harness is stock you have resistance wire. It's red and should be a larger diameter than the rest of the wiring.... Your year of Jeep never came with a ballast resistor.

Re: Do I Need One

Hi LEVE, I don't think there is any resistor wire on my Jeep now, the guy that owned it before me cut off all kinds of wires. Now the power to the coil is coming from a yellow wire, that is tied into a few other yellow wires in the wiring harness on the fire wall. I have about 10 volts to the coil, is this about right?
Thanks for your reply.
