Axle designation

Anyone know what the large N stands for on the top of my amc 20 rear end? This is the first one I have seen this on and was wondering if it is different from the others.

TIA

Re: Axle designation

On the top? If it's on the side, it's the axle code, narrow track should have 3.54 gears and Trac-Lok in it. Where specifically on your axle? Can you give us more info?

Re: Axle designation

Its got a large N cast into the top of the casting(as mounted in jeep), about 2" back from the diff. cover edge, centered on the round of the housing. Ill try to borrow the digital camera so I can take a pic.

Re: Axle designation

They do a designation like that on the Ford 9" axles. It stands for Nodular Iron in the case of the Ford. It is a lot stronger axle housing if it is a Nodular Iron housing.
