Outer axle seal question?

I need some info on installing a a outer axle seal on a Model 20 Rear axle. When installing the seal inside the brake drum, is it a good idea to put some RTV on the metal lip to make sure gear oil doesn't leak out? And do you need any shims. The reason I am asking is because I replaced the seal and it had no shims. And I did not put any RTV on the seal. It looks like its still leaking. So I have to take it apart one more time. Also I rented a hub puller that worked great, but I would like to buy my own. Does anybody know were I could buy a good hub puller.
Thanks RCJ7

Re: Outer axle seal question?

What's leaking? If it's gear lube you will need to replace the inner axle seal(17). Check out the pic. If it's bearing grease then redo the flange seal. Shims were only used on one side like the pic shows. You might be on the other side or somehow your housing maybe the right size and no shims needed.

Re: Outer axle seal question?

It is gear lube. So do you know if the flang seal (17) is all the way inside of the rear end? Or is it right behind the bearings?

No it's right behind the bearings. Pull the shaft and pop the seal out.

Re: Outer axle seal question?

the seal could be leaking because your axle could be worn down right where the bearing sits. Check it for wear if it is then you need new axles
