outer axle seal assembly D44?

I'm getting ready to put a D44 together, and was looking at the outer axle seals for it. It seems the rubber seal that sits next to the needle bearing in the spindle has a "U" cross-section and the plastic retainer that goes on after that has a beveled section on one side. Anyone know which direction these little gizmos should face? This is from a 73 GM 1/2 ton 4x4 set-up.

Re: outer axle seal assembly D44?

The bevel on the thrust washer goes against the axle. The bevel is for clearance so it will sit flush against
the face of the axle. If you look closely there is a little bit of a fillet where the washer needs to sit. The
thick part of the seal goes on the axle and the thin part rides against the backside of the spindle around
where the torrington bearing is inside the spindle (the outer shaft rides on this bearing). Good luck.Nickmil

Re: outer axle seal assembly D44?

Hmmm, I was almost going to say that I answered my own question, but apparently the photo in the almighty "Jeep Owners Bible" is misleading. It shows the thrust washer facing the other direction...with the bevel towards the spindle. The other small seal (same diam. as the needle bearing) is shown with the close side toward the needle bearing and the open side toward the thrust washer. Is that correct? The main grease seal I understand. This would probably have been easier had I actually had my long awaited axles in my sweaty little hands.
