Fuel Injection

I have found an 87 4.0 jeep comanche in the boneyard. It has a complete fuel injection unit that I can get for under 200.00 with me pulling.
Have already done a 4.0 head swap on my 78 258 with HEI.

How much hassle would it be to swap over to my engine?

What parts will I need?

I can get all including the harness and sensors etc.

Most of all, will it be worth it?

Re: Fuel Injection

The only thing you will need to buy is an Advanced Adapter bellhousing. You need this for the crank positioning sensor. Also, get the flywheel. It is required for the CPS. I just finished a swap with an '89 4.0. Not too tough. And it runs great. You will not miss your carb.

Re: Fuel Injection

Or easier yet (and cheaper), buy the harmonic balancer from Hesco which takes the place of the flywheel CPS.

Re: Fuel Injection

The Mopar spfi balancer will not work with the older Renix fuel injection. The tone notches are different.

Re: Fuel Injection

dorfs is right. You cannot use the harmonic balancer CPS set up. I bought the bellhousing from No Excuses, $340 delivered. The balancer kit runs about $275 if I recall. And the sensors are cheaper for the bellhousing version anyway.

The older Renix 4.0's have their advantage. The peak torque is about 2400 rpm vs about 4200 for the newer 4.0. The older 4.0 has an anti-knock sensor. The difference of about 13 hp is breathing. Which is not torque friendly anyway. So, go for it.

Re: Fuel Injection

Ah yes, now I remember. I had forgotten that the early 4.0's used the Renix injection system. Thanks for straightening me out!

Re: Fuel Injection

Bob : You said rennix peak torque at 2400 rpms, what is tourqe at 2400. Then 4.0 peaks at 4200, but what is tourqe at 2400 rpm on 4.0.
Peak tourqe at lower rpms means nothing if it has less total torque and other engine has more tourqe at higher rpms but same tourqe at 2400 rpms.
I am not bashing here but nobody has shown me comparitive tourqe curves of 4.2 , 4.0 and 4.0 with rennix. And I have asked and looked on the net. But cant find it. Jeff

Re: Fuel Injection

If I remember correctly, Peterson's 4WD did a 4.0 swap into an older Jeep (258). I think they just drilled a hole in the 258 bellhousing for the sensor. I could be wrong. This is just something that I have in the back of my melon.

Re: Fuel Injection

The bellhousing would be my problem-Mine is currently mated to a t-400.Was hoping the h-balancer could be changed. The donor vehicle has a serpintine belt and mine a V.
