1986 J20 Dana 44

I am thinking of putting in a Lock Right unit. I have a Dana 44 frontend in my Jeep out of an 1986 J20 3/4 ton. I dont know how many splines I have. The gear ratio is 3.73 (I think) How do I tell without taking it apart.

Put the front end on jack stands and have some one spin the opposite tire at the same time you spin the other in the same direction. Count the number of rotations the yoke coming out of the diff makes. three and half = 3.54, three and three quarters=3.73. This is assuming your tag is gone from the diff and you can't just crawl under and read the tag. Hubs will have to be locked as well.

Can you fix it?
I got a welder and a grinder. Heck yeah I can fix it.

actually my spider gears are blown and that is why I am thinking of putting in a lockright unit. I was actually trying to figure out my spline count so I know which Lock Right unit to buy.

I am pretty sure a late model axle like that has the 30 spline shafts. If the spider gears are blown, pull the diff cover and see if you can see the splines of the shafts. The difference in 30 spline and 19 spline is rather obvious once you see them

You should have 30 splines, the 19 spline D44's ended in 1970. According to my tea leaves again, the largest axle shaft offered in the D44 was the 30 spline. Dynatrac and a few others make replacement axles that carry the upgraded yokes on the ends for the larger u-joints.
