POR15 and Herculiner Problems Together?

When I was prepping my YJ tub (which is going on my CJ) I noticed some rust in the footwells. I prepped the area with some rough sanding and cleaned the area with Xylene and applied POR-15. The tub sat in my garage for a while (maybe a month), before I applied Herciliner. After 5 months of sitting in my garage the tub looked fine. I put the tub on the CJ frame and stored it outdoors exposed to the weather. Well after 6 weeks the footwell areas look as though they were never painted. The rust has returned as it was before I started and it looks as if the Herculiner and POR15 have disappeared.

Anyone have any advice or similar experiences?

Re: POR15 and Herculiner Problems Together?

I used Por15 and Herculiner on my "new" YJ tub for my CJ-7 about 6-8 months ago and haven't had any problems. Mine is garage stored though. Maybe the Xylene didn't allow the Por15 to adhere to the metal? Did you use the Por15 Metal Ready stuff to etch/prep the metal?

At the time I didn't have Metal Ready, now I do. I will use it first, before applying the POR-15.

How long did you wait before putting the Herculiner on top of the POR-15?

POR 15 requires a primer before it can be topcoated. whay might have happened is the herculiner didn't stick to the POR 15 which didn't stick to the metal because of the Xylene.

Re: POR15 and Herculiner Problems Together?

MarkF,
I waited a couple of weeks to put the Herculiner on. Not becuase it was neccesary, but because I was doing other stuff to the tub. I didn't use a primer coat over the POR15, I just scuffed it up really good so it was no longer shiny. I did, however, use POR15's Marine Clean (degreaser) and Metal Ready. No problems yet.
