Gears for 1982 CJ Axles

I will like to know if the stock carriers of a 1982 cj7
will hold 3.54s gear ratio. Stock gearing is 2.72s. I ask
because in the off-road.com page it says that both dana 30
and AMC 20 with 2.72 gear ratio will need a new carrier for
lower gearing and I have been told by some people that thats
not true and you can install the lower gearing without replacing the existing carrier. Pls any help will be appreciated.
tks

Call Randy Ring & Pinion (888-324-9091) or Drivetrain Direct (888-584-4327) to get a clear answer. They'll have their chart handy and can tell you for sure. I dont remember for sure where the carrier break is on either one (I think you'll need 1 new carrie but not 2), so I'd call and ask. Check their new carrier prices while your talking. Both places have good reputations and should be willing to help. Prices ought to be pretty close too, and one will match the other's price.

Re: Gears for 1982 CJ Axles

ok.. what they are talking about.. is what is commonly called "carrier breaks".. its where you have to change out the carrier for different gears.. all axles are different.. due to their size.. and what gears are available..
amc 20= 2.73 & down, 3.07 & up
meaning if you have 2.72's and you want to put 3.54's then you need another carrier.. one that the gears will fit with.. you might be able to bolt the ring gear on.. but it wont line up with the pinion.. unless its the right carrier..
D30=3.54 & down, 3.73 & up...

jeepgod is right about the carrier breaks. I have just one question, why does everyone list the AMC 20 as 2.72 and down? To the best of my knowledge, there is no down, you're already there.
