\'57 Willis 4 cyl Hurricane - Leaded gas? Oil?

As I was putting the first five gallons of gasoline in my newly aquired '57 CJ-6 the thought occured to me that I should be adding a lead additive for the old Hurricane 4 banger. Right?
The poor old mill is on it's last legs but I still don't want to worsen the condition the valves are in now.
I have to put it's Dana 18 in low range just to climb the hilly street I live on as it is!
How about oil? Non-Detergent I suppose??
I'm ordering a service manual for it tomorrow ....

It should have a lead additive in the fuel, but from the sounds of it you should pe planning a rebuild or swap. If you rebuild the engine spend the money for hardened valve seats and new valve guides this will allow you to run unleaded. As far as oil Im pretty sure that it should take an API S_ rating.

good luck, jjc

Re: \'57 Willis 4 cyl Hurricane - Leaded gas? Oil?

I had an Austin Mini that was set up for lead fuel. I ran unleaded in it for several years without any problems; its not like you are going to put allot of miles on it. It sounds like the motor is dead already so who cares if the valve guides get a little extra abuse.

Could you please post a few more pics of the old girl, I really like CJ6's.
