AMC 401 in an International?

While at a local wrecking yard looking for an AMC 401 to replace the tired AMC 304 in my 1978 CJ-5 with a CJ T-18, I was told that the 401 in an International is the same motor that was used in a Jeep. Is this true?

If so-

-Will the belhousing and trans fit?
-Will the motor mounts fit?
-Anything else that I shoud know?

Thanks!
Kriss

Re: AMC 401 in an International?

i don't think that IH ever offered a 401. from what i have read the only motor shared between the two companies was the 258 I6. even though the internationals used a 304 they will not bolt to a jeep tranny. if you do find a scout with a 258 then you could use that tranny/x-case and bolt an amc v-8 right to it.

Does anyone have the motor codes for the International? Maybe I could check the codes on the motor to see if they match Jeep.

Re: AMC 401 in an International?

i don't know about the codes but all amc motors had the size cast in the side of the blocks. on the v-8's look underneath the motor mount and you'll see the numbers (304, 360, 390, 401). if it is an amc 401 you'll see the numbers.

Re: AMC 401 in an International?

IH had a 196 4 cly, 304 v8, 345 v8, and 392 v8. They also used the AMC 258 I6. The IH engines do not interchange(99% sure). You wouldn't want to anyway. The IH v8s weigh a ton (around 785 pounds)and very little in the way of aftermarket performance parts are available for them. They are good motors(long mileage life and reliable) , but as a swap choice going with a more common motor such as a chevy v6 or small block or a Ford 302 makes better sense. If you are loooking for some info on IH v8s, there is an article in the june 96 issue of Four Wheeler.

the IH engines don't exchange but the 258 will.

Re: AMC 401 in an International?

Thanks for the help!. If it's not a true "bolt in", I'm not interested in the motor. I want an AMC 401 because I want to gain some power but do not want to have start reconstruction to do it.

Thanks!

Re: AMC 401 in an International?

Ozarks right. The last two years of the travelall and p/u (1974 & 1975) were offered with a 400ci engine which actually was the amc 401. It had the amc bolt pattern. Ihc just listed it as a 400. It will have the 401 in the block -passenger side below the exhaust manifold but the line ticket will list it as a 400. The only other difference will possibly be only a two bbl carb and intake. Most of (in fact every one I've seen) waggoneer or j truck had the 4bbl.
