My 84 CJ-7 has started to eat starters!!!

I just got done this last winter rebuilding my 258 inline 6. Put a new flywheel gear on, new starter and it worked great at first. Now it seems to want to eat the gears off of the starter about once a week. I get a new gear and bearring put in, take my time putting the starter back in and check how its lining up. A week latter, gear is shot again . HELP!!!!!!!!

Probably needs shims. Read the post titled something about shimming a starter on the 3rd page back by JUN11, I think that should help you out. Later.

It is definately engaging too much or at an angle...make sure it is perpindicular and try some shims or just adding thin flat washers if you don't have proper shims to pull the started toward the ground a little

I hate signatures!
