Insulated the hardtop for the CJ

I just completed insulating the hard top on the CJ. I am hoping that will help it stay a bit warmer this winter in North Dakota. Actually, it went well and want to share what I did for about $50.00. Purchased some 5/8" dense foam and glued it to the hard top. Then purchased the black-clothe backed vinyl from a fabric warehouse. I glued that to the foam and then folded it under on the edges. I used a 3M SuperAdhesive spray to glue the material together. I'm real optimistic that it will do the trick and not fall down over my head while driving.

Re: Insulated the hardtop for the CJ

The happy people of Brutovia must have this secret process. We are dispatching Igor Katlov, master spy, to find out how you could do this. The happy people are tired of freezing in their Jeeps in winter, and frying in the summer. The happy people have wanted to do this very thing, but never had the nerve. I am downloading your post into the "CJ Works" folder. Thanks for the info.

The scary thing is that I *have* seen a YJ with velvet rollbar covers...it was a show Jeep back in Jersey.

Larry......there is a Jeep guy there in AZ who did insulate his top for heat resistance, but I don't have his name handy. I may have it in my CJ "Works" binder somewhere. He claimed it was a big success. He didn't exactly have to run the heater, but I gather that it did help a little.

Re: Insulated the hardtop for the CJ

Dave no need to look for it on my behalf.... the CJ's AC has since been converted to on-board air and it's no longer my daily driver.

FYI - The 2001 TJ's have 4-ply hard tops that (supposedly) greatly reduce the noise and help with temperatures.

Have a good weekend everyone,
