I smell gas!!

All of these weird problems that crop up after a swap!!!

While off-roading the first time since the swap was complete, I traveled some 20 miles on a rough washboard road. After stopping to take a biological break I noticed a fairly strong smell of gasoline and the fuel pump was so loud you could hear it over the exhaust. I removed the filler cap and air rushed into the tank so fast that it srirred up the dust on my spare tire! The pump quieted down a bit. I shut off the motor and let it sit for 7 or 8 minutes and fired it up no problems the rest of the day.

I replaced the filer cap with a new Mopar part. I still smell gas occassionaly when the Jeep gets shaken up a bit. Sometimes it is really bad.

What the heck is up? When I smell gas I stop and crawl under the Jeep - no wet spots or damp spots. The smell is the worst around the driver side rear tire.
BTW I do not have a top on the Jeep.

Re: I smell gas!!

my first questions would be what kind of fuel pump are you running (a jeep pump or a chevy style as they would have different pressure outputs) and how are you returning the fuel to the tank. i would think that a 90's vortec setup would have different requirements for gas cap presure/venting than a late 80's mopar. again i'll have to do some checking tomorrow. *shrug*
oh yeah, are you sure the air rushed into the tank and not out? if it was coming out, it might be the vapors from the vent on top of the tank that you are smelling. just a thought.
