AXLE IDENTIFICATION?

I know this page is for short wheel base jeeps, but I will ask anyway.
Today I looked under the cherokee to see if I could figure out what type axles it has.
It is all stock, but I still wanted to know.
On the rear axle I looked to the right side of the diff cover and saw 35-C.
I am assuming this is a Dana 35-C axle.
On the front axle I was unsuccessful in finding any numbers whatsoever.
Does anybody happen to know what axles were used in the front of Cherokees in '87?
Are the 35-C axles any good for moderate wheelin' with 30" tires?

Also, how am I supposed to know what gears are in the diff?
Is it stamped near the same place on the diff?

Next on the list is identifying the axles on my '46 Willys.
I looked, and scraped off goo, and looked, and scraped off goo, and looked some more, but I never found anything but patent numbers.
Is there something different in identifying older axles like these?
The axles on the Willys are stock too.
All I know about the drive train on the Willys is it has the L-134 motor, Three speed tranny, and a spicer 18 x-fer case.
Beyond that is up to you guys help.
TIA

Re: AXLE IDENTIFICATION?

If the 46 willys is stock it should have a dana 25 front and either a dana 23-2 or a dana 41 in the rear, depending on when in 46 it was built.

Re: AXLE IDENTIFICATION?

JessieJ, what is your take on these axles?
Good, bad, ugly, I can take it.
The serial number for the jeep I believe is in the 76,000's if this helps.
I am not sure how many were made that year.

Re: AXLE IDENTIFICATION?

Redbeard,

From the info that I have, your jeep should have the dana 41 in the rear. What kind of 4 wheeling do you pan on doing?
also what mods (engine, lift, tires, etc...) are in your plans? both of these axles are pretty weak by todays standards, but they will work fine if you plan to leave the rest of the jeep pretty much stock.

Re: AXLE IDENTIFICATION?

The axle in the front of your cherokee is a Dana 30.
I know a few guys running the stock axles with lockers in their cherokees with 32" tires. They have been known to break a rear axle every now and then.
With an open diff and 30" tires you should be ok.

Re: AXLE IDENTIFICATION?

Guys, thanks for the information.

JesseJ, the Willys is most likely going to be left in stock form.
It will be used around the deer lease and not much else.
The only place it might have trouble is one hill which is very rocky, steep, and bumpy.
We will see when the time comes for it.
The Willys is a beater that will have the luxury of carrying my deer for me.

ChrisM, Thank you for the info.
I thought about putting ARB's in the axles at one time, but the money was too much for me.
Currently all the running gear is stock and I have 30" tires on it.
I hope I can return the favor in the future.
