best way to drill holes?

I am going to be doing a buggy spring set up in the near future, and I was wondering how everyone goes about drilling holes in the springs to secure them to the frame? That metal is really hard to drill through, so I just wanted to know if anyone had some easy or easier way to do it. Thanks in advance.

Re: best way to drill holes?

Two things come to mind, slow drill press and lots of oil.

Re: best way to drill holes?

Fred,
I feel sorry for you....when I was drilling the holes in my springs for the teflon pads I ate up 6 drill bits and never got a single hole done. I am lucky in that I have access to a HEAVY DUTY punch....you know, one of those 12 foot tall scary machines that will punch 2" hole in 1/2" steel....worked great on the springs.....

Do what John says....but you might want to try to find a really hard drill...not you local Craftsman...Also, make sure you drill a small pilot hole...you may even have to drill it several times going up a few sizes each time.

Good Luck

Re: best way to drill holes?

They last post talked about a hard drill, you might want to find cobalt drill bits. They can go thru anything, they also come with a very flat angle at the tip(135degrees)witch helps as well.

Masonary drill bit - sharpened slightly with a grinder. Lots of oil (Tap-ease is niiiiiiice). Take it slow. And a drill press makes life MUCh easier (but a hand drill *will* work.
You will have to re-sharpen the bit a few times during the process, but it works, I swear...

Re: best way to drill holes? - The secret...

I did this for a friends CJ. He told me where to put the holes and I cut them with the YAG Laser we have at work. No cutting oil, no messed up drill bits, and it took about 20 seconds per hole. Check for a local Big machine shop in your area, if they don't have a Laser, they will know someone who does. Find an operator who is into 4x4's and he'll probably do it for free!

Well, I guess my silly masonary bit pales in comparison to a LASER!!!!!

Too cool!

Wow, a laser
How do I add one of those under my hood for trail repairs?

I think that the underhood Premier Power Laser has met with some governmental regulation problems - something about accidentally turning on while in traffic and cutting a few cars in half at a stoplight.... I may be wrong though
